Investigation and Testing of Existing Structures and Construction Materials Presented By: Ralf Leistikow, P.E.
Wiss Janey Elstner, Inc.

The presentation will discuss various investigative and testing techniques utilized in the evaluation of existing structures and construction materials. This will include a review of various non-destructive and destructive testing techniques utilized in the evaluation of the following construction materials:

  • Concrete
  • Steel
  • Masonry
  • Wood
Available testing techniques and equipment to evaluate these materials and/or determine potential defects both in the field and the laboratory will be discussed. In addition, general principles and reference standards for each test method will be reviewed. Where multiple test techniques are available for a given construction material or condition, the presentation will include a review of potential advantages and limitations of each test method

Since joining WJE in 1991, Ralf Leistikow has been involved in numerous structural investigations, evaluations, and repair designs on low-and high-rise buildings, as well as parking, commercial, and underground structures. His work includes the evaluation of post-tensioned, precast, and conventionally reinforced concrete structures; cast-in-place pavements and industrial floors; wood framed and light gauge metal framed structures; structural steel framed structures; pre-engineered buildings and building components; and concrete, brick masonry, stone, stucco, and EIFS wall systems.

Mr. Leistikow evaluates and prepares documents for concrete repairs on various above-and below-grade structures located nationwide. He participates in and leads the investigation of structural damage and deterioration related to excessive loadings, deflections, deficient construction materials, moisture infiltration, fire, and corrosion. These projects include the evaluation and repair design of deteriorated embedded items such as corroded post-tensioning strands, mild reinforcing, and steel connections.
